Resume for an accountant

Accounting resumes are checked for credential status and for the work inside the close. Say whether you are licensed, a candidate, or neither. Then show the close, the reconciliations, and the standards you applied.

Put this near the top

Credential and scope are the screening lines.

  • Credential status in plain language: CPA licensed, CPA candidate, or no CPA. Name the jurisdiction if you are licensed. Do not write CPA while the license is still in progress.
  • The kind of books: public company, private, nonprofit, public accounting firm. The size of the entity only if you know it and it is yours to state.
  • The systems you close in. If the posting names NetSuite, SAP, QuickBooks, or another system and you have closed in it, put that first.

Write the experience this way

Describe the accounting work, not a personality trait.

  • Month-end or year-end close: what you owned, how many entities, and whether you reviewed other people's work.
  • Reconciliations, audit support, tax, payroll, or revenue only for the work you did. Name the standard when you applied one, such as GAAP or IFRS, and skip the ones you did not.
  • A result you can explain: a close that moved from ten days to six because of a reconciliation you rebuilt. If you do not have that story, describe the accounts you owned.

Leave this off

These lines fail a careful read.

  • A software list of products you opened once.
  • "Detail-oriented" or "team player" with no account, close, or review underneath.
  • CPA, CMA, or ACCA before the credential is awarded.
  • An objective paragraph that restates the job title.

The work history stays in one career profile. Paste a posting and Profica rewrites the title, the leading bullets, and the emphasis for that job. How resume tailoring works.

Questions

Can I write CPA candidate?

Yes, if that is accurate: you are in the exams or the experience requirement and you are not yet licensed. Write the status in words. Do not put the letters CPA after your name until the license is issued.

How much of the close should I describe?

The parts you owned. Preparing the bank reconciliation is different from reviewing the full close. Say which one you did, and for how many entities if you know the count.

Should the resume change for industry versus public accounting?

Yes. Industry postings want the close and the systems. Firm postings want clients, industries, and the workpaper role. Keep one profile and change which of those facts lead. That is what a Profica generation does from the posting.
